"gloss": "A reusable route through coarse regions of a problem space, where each step names a condition to reach and leaves how to reach it to the executor's judgment",
"mechanism": "When routes between the same kind of start and the same kind of goal recur, as a {{thinking_trace}} makes visible, they compress into a recipe: a short sequence of steps that works for the whole class, not one instance, a {{model_as_compression}} of many routes. The compression is achieved by coarse-graining. Each step names a region of the space and a test for having arrived (until golden; until the stakeholders are listed), instead of an exact operation. The gap inside each step is bridged by the executor's local competence at run time, which is what makes the recipe fuzzy and also what makes it short: like a {{productive_prediction_machine}}, it is simplified by what it can predict, here that the executor will cross each gap. An algorithm is the limiting case where every region is a single point and no judgment remains. The right grain is set by the executor, as in {{delegation_discipline}}: a recipe for an expert is shorter and fuzzier than one for a novice, and the same recipe is both at once for different hands. Recipes, policies, methods and procedures all take this form.",
