NaturalProblem#4e94
A problem where making attempts comparable is what prevents solving it
Mechanism
Meta-precision is the shared metric that makes attempts commensurable; meta-accuracy is hitting any of several available targets, each with its own encoding. In artificial problems the two coincide, because the ranking metric also defines success. In a natural problem raising meta-accuracy necessarily costs meta-precision, and the signature is loss of commensurability, as in alternative splicing or disordered proteins. This is one form BoundedModelOpenWorld takes when a single metric is imposed.
Invariants
- In a natural problem no single distance-to-fitness can be computed across all targets
- Standardising the metric forecloses the targets it does not rank
Failure modes
- Single-objective optimisation stalls in local minima that a single metric cannot cross
- Standardising terminology or benchmarks before a domain is understood
