Stigmergy#ab14
Agents coordinate indirectly by leaving traces in a shared environment that cue later actions
Mechanism
An agent's action modifies the environment (a pheromone mark, a moved grain, an edited file), and the modification becomes a stimulus for later actions by the same or other agents. No message is addressed to anyone; the environment is the communication channel and the memory. With reinforcement, such as successful foragers strengthening a pheromone trail that recruits more foragers who strengthen it further, noisy individual exploration is amplified into coherent structure, an instance of SelfOrganisation. Each agent still follows a LocalLearningRule: it reads only the traces where it stands. Cognitively limited agents thereby offload memory to the environment, and the trace field records the collective's history without any agent holding it.
Invariants
- Agents interact through modifications of a shared medium, not by direct messages
- Traces persist longer than the action that made them
- Each agent responds only to traces available locally
Failure modes
- Runaway reinforcement: positive feedback locks the collective onto a suboptimal trail unless traces decay
- Trace decay too fast for reinforcement to accumulate, so no structure forms
- Corrupted or spoofed traces mislead every agent that reads them
- Attributing coordination to direct communication when it runs through the environment, or the reverse
