ColonyIntelligence#234d
Colony-level adaptive behavior emerges from individual agents following local rules
Mechanism
Ants act by LocalLearningRule and no ant holds the colony plan, yet the colony adapts. A mechanism must recognize signal in noise and then build on top of it. Understanding how random information starts to make sense to a collection of simple units is the open question, in biological and artificial systems alike.
Invariants
- No unit holds the global plan
- Signal recognition precedes accumulation
Failure modes
- Reading design into what is only aggregate statistics
- Missing the mechanism that turns noise into signal
