FractionalDelivery#a3e4
Partly build responses to possible stressors; the cost of carrying them is preparedness
Mechanism
Rather than fully building or omitting a response to each possible exogenous stressor, build it fractionally: complete some of the components it needs, such as data carried through two of three pipeline stages. If the stressor arrives, few components remain to change; if it never will, the fraction is removed. Partly built function is an endogenous stress, a carrying cost and a source of friction, but it is also the stored optionality described in RejectionCostOptionality. The right level of fractional delivery rises with the likelihood of the stressor. It makes the stressor integration of ResidualityStressorIntegration cheaper. Fast metrics of endogenous stress, such as today's rejection rate, can signal an exogenous stressor and trigger full delivery.
Invariants
- Full delivery and no delivery are special cases of fractional delivery
- Endogenous stress rises with the amount of partly delivered function
Failure modes
- An over-stressed system carries many fractions that will never be needed
- An under-stressed system has too little prepared to adapt in time
- Reading the friction of partly built function as pure inefficiency and removing it
