GoalMisspecification#ad3f
A wrong goal defeats correct execution; choosing the goal is the highest-leverage decision
Mechanism
Effort applied faithfully to the wrong goal ends in the wrong place, so the goal must be examined before any action. Goals often reflect inherited desires, insecurity, or a story about what one deserves rather than what one wants. A goal aligned with what is actually wanted takes less effort to maintain.
Invariants
- Goal choice precedes execution
- Underestimated effort and unexamined desire are the common causes of failure
Failure modes
- Loving the goal instead of what it was for
- Reaching the goal and having nothing left
