MotivatedInstrumentTuning#ed8f
Investigators who need a result tune their instruments toward it, often without intent
Mechanism
When identity, career, or brand depends on a claim, the person adjusts instrument settings, exclusions, and reporting toward confirming it, usually subconsciously. The same applies to a model whose context holds a belief: it finds support for what it already holds. Unreported tuning choices make the resulting evidence unreliable.
Invariants
- Bias arises from incentives and identity, not necessarily bad faith
- Instrument settings are part of the result and must be reported
Failure modes
- Literature dominated by confirming findings
- Unreproducible results from unreported settings
