ActiveInferenceHomeostasis#1892
Baked-in survival ranges become priors, and gaps between prior and state drive action
Mechanism
The ranges an organism must stay in to live act as priors inside PredictionErrorMinimization. Whenever the current or predicted state departs from those ranges, the mismatch becomes an incentive to act or to learn something new. Motivation is thereby a consequence of uncertainty reduction relative to fixed homeostatic targets.
Invariants
- Priors encode viability ranges
- Gap between state and prior is the driver of action
Failure modes
- Anxiety from perpetual prediction of future departures
- Priors that no longer match the environment
