DistributedIntelligence#3aa5
Many model instances selectively exchange information to reduce uncertainty about their environments
Mechanism
Different instantiations of similar models, each updating by a LocalLearningRule, selectively exchange and interpret each other's information to reduce uncertainty about their environments, each practising PredictionErrorMinimization. No instance holds the whole picture. The collective capability is an instance of SelfOrganisation: it arises from the exchanges and is not specified by any one instance.
Invariants
- Each instance acts on local information plus what others choose to share
- No single instance holds or controls the collective model
Failure modes
- Model style convergence: instances too similar to hold different information
- Exchanges without selection flood each instance with noise
- A hub instance quietly becomes a central controller
- Unstructured swarm: with no orchestration, internal bureaucracy grows and the swarm slowly reinvents the structure it could have been given; light structure such as CoordinatorLaneTopology is far more efficient
